A longitudinal study was conducted with academics from a federal university in southern Brazil. The statistical analysis used chi-square test to compare proportions and McNemar test for paired data. The sample showed a higher frequency of actives among males, singles and nonsmokers. There was no significant difference in actives between courses and between periods. The period of one year after entry into the university showed no differences in physical activity, however the low prevalence in the leisure domain warn of continuity in monitoring, since these individuals, as well as to benefit from this healthy behavior, will be forthcoming disseminators of it.
