Mutations that alter normal splice patterns and genomic rearrangements are common causes of hereditary diseases including hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer. However, abnormal transcripts can be difficult to detect and interpret because splicing patterns are often heterogeneous even in normal cells.
