Presentation on usability given at Technical University Berlin (innoCampus, 2016) and Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (Science in Society seminar, 2017). Some of us are involved in producing online applications, such as websites, apps, online forms and so on. As producers of an application, we may ask ourselves the question: "does the system function?". We may be able to answer this question by ourselves by testing the system for correct functionality: is the performance as expected, is the system

We may ask the users their opinion about the interface layout, about their availability requirements (online / offline), the system's capacity to react to their commands, whether the functionality provided by the system is fit-for-purpose, how suitable is the support and helpdesk, whether the user manual is understandable and many other things. Using theories for research into computing matters is still unusual. But there are several theories that could come in handy, as they provide a reference framework, within which it becomes possible to generate and organize questions.
