Taken thence to the belfry as hurriedly as possible, stunned and senseless, the child was left for dead, high above any probable search o chance of discovery. Her involuntary screams, less than a quarter of an hour later, made known her concealment to the neighborhood, already in alarm on account of her disappearance. The arrest and conviction of the sexton are matters of general notoriety.
