Equity in School Breakfast: A Case Study at Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools

The School Breakfast Program (SBP) is a federally mandated program that has been shown to be associated with improved student test scores, behavior, attendance, and physical well-being. While free and reduced-eligible student qualify for both breakfast and lunch, breakfast participation consistently lags behind lunch consumption around the country. I spent 10 weeks at the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools (CHCCS) Child Nutrition Department analyzing the breakfast program and understanding the
more » ... understanding the challenges of delivering a quality school breakfast and encouraging widespread student participation. I investigated the Breakfast After the Bell program that sought to make breakfast at school more convenient and analyzed its impact on district breakfast participation. Additionally, I looked at recommendations for the district to push for equity in school breakfast while expanding its reach and participation numbers.
