A simulation framework to evaluate time savings in operating rooms

Operating rooms are highly cost intensive parts in hospitals. Due to cost pressure, hospitals are increasing their effort to use them more efficiently, while maintaining or improving the quality of surgical service. Therefore, the aim of this work is to evaluate different approaches to improve the surgery workflow. First, processes are parallelized in order to save non-operative time by using an induction room. more » ... nt interruptions during surgeries caused by missing equipment. A discrete-event simulation framework models the workflow as a benchmark covering a real case in a Lisbon hospital. Time saving potentials are examined by incorporating an induction room and surgery boxes into the framework. Compared to the benchmark, both approaches lead to time savings and an increase in patient safety.
