This article analyzes representations of money in the state of Goiás between the years 1808 and 1848. By using methodological parameters derived from the History of Material Culture fi eld along with the fi eld of Cultural History, the present study has determined that the society of the above-referred state has experienced a severe scarcity of cash, which gave rise to specifi c practices and representations in relation to money.
