Growing numbers of complex surgical interventions increase the need for blood transfusions, which cannot be fulfilled by the number of donors. Therefore, the interest in producing erythrocytes from their precursors—the hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs)—in laboratories is rising.
