Brookhaven National Laboratory is operated by Associated Universities, Inc., under contract with the United States Atomic Energy Commission. Nine northeastern universities sponsor Associated Universities, Inc. Two representatives from each university, one a principal administrative or corporate officer and the other a scientist, form the Board of Trustees of AUI. AUI has appointed five visiting committees to Brookhaven National Laboratory to provide a continuing independent evaluation of the research program. These committees cover the fields of biology, chemistry, engineering, medicine, and physics, and report annually to the Board of Trustees.
