There were 370 people participated and over 170 papers submitted. ICASS was very successful thanks to all the attendants including 85 people from 17 oversea countries. Since the scope of this special issue was the same as that of ICASS and the papers presented in ICASS were highly valuable, the organizing committee of ICASS asked the speakers to submit their papers to this special issue. Steel production had increased remarkably in the 20th century, and its importance will continue into the 21st century as long as steel is used as a major structural material.
