For 32 years under the New Order regime (from 1966-1998), Chinese languages and cultural expressions were banned in Indonesia. During this period of assimilation, hundreds of Chinese medium schools and media were closed, and the formal teaching of Chinese languages in Indonesia effectively ceased. As a result,
