This thesis tackles the interaction of conference interpreters with the various artifacts in the interpreting booth. Based on the situated cognition approach, the study investigates which artifacts are to be found in the interpreting booth, how conference interpreters use them and how they configure their cognitive space. A non-participant observation of interpreting students during two practice conferences at the Centre for Translation Studies and an online survey allow first of all for a
more » ... ification of the artifacts according to medium and purpose or function. Furthermore, various behavioural patterns and iterative interactions with the artifacts are described. Thus, the thesis offers new insights into interpreting, because it explores the environment of conference interpreters and shows its significant role during an interpreting job.
