A controversy concerning the shielding of coherent synchrotron radiation has existed for many y ears. Estimates of the reduction of radiated power by nearby conducting surfaces in LHC dier by several orders of magnitude when one uses the expressions given in two o f t h e major papers in the eld. A clarication of this problem as well as the expected values for coherent synchrotron radiation in LEP and LHC are presented here.
