Surgical Treatment for Graves' Disease

The outcome of surgery for Graves' disease was studied in 88 patients in the 15 year period 1984-1998. There were 67 women and 21 men . The patients undergone subtotal thyroidectomy followed over the 6 month, except total thyroidectomy , were 76. Fifty patients (65.7%) were euthyroid, 6 (7.9%) were euthyroid with elevated TSH, 9 (11 .8%) were recurrent hyperthyroid ism and 11 (14.5%) had hypothyroidism . There was no relationship between remnant thyroid weights and postoperative thyroid
more » ... . After operation there were three cases (3 .4%) of transient recurrent nerve palsy and one case of hypof unction of parathyroid glands .
