We give a classification theorem for cellular automata, showing that either there is a minimal quasi-attractor whose basin has full measure, or else no chain component has a basin with positive measure. M. Hurley COROLLARY. In Case 1 or in case 2(a), if the minimal quasi-attractor is a periodic orbit, then it is a single point, fixed by both f and the shift.
