RESUMO: Este artigo investiga a importância do domínio técnico e teórico das artes visuais, com ênfase na pintura, a partir da observação do legado dos grandes mestres. O trabalho propõe aperfeiçoar a experiência estética na modernidade através da leitura de obras de arte, começando pela detalhada análise de uma tela do pintor barroco francês Simon Vouet. Em sua diversidade, as imagens selecionadas expressam contextos em que há luta, opressão, beleza, espiritualidade e, nessa medida, instigam-nos uma reflexão crítica cujas referências fundamentais são a própria arte como forma de conhecimento e a ética. ABSTRACT: This paper investigates the importance of technical and theoretical domain of visual arts, with an emphasis on painting from observation of the legacy of the great masters. The work aims to improve the aesthetic experience in modernity through work of art reading, starting with the detailed analysis of a screen of French Baroque painter Simon Vouet. In sequence there is a comparative analysis and critique of this painter and Rubens. From Brazilian artist Lênio Braga we analyze a sculpture and a reinterpretation of Rubens. We stress the importance of Goya and Rembrandt to modern art and the influence of this Dutch painter and Eisenstein film on the work of Francis Bacon. In its diversity, the selected images express contexts in which there is struggle, oppression, beauty, spirituality, and to that extent, instigate us a critical reflection whose fundamental references are the art itself as a form of knowledge and ethics.
