The use of the EC method for the study of energy flows on the Earth's surface is associated with certain disadvantages. According to the first law of thermodynamics, the incoming and outgoing energy on the land surface must be in balance. However, the turbulent fluxes derived from EC measurements are generally systematically smaller than the available energy measured at the land surface. This energy balance gap is a pervasive and persistent problem in micrometeorological research.
