Proponho-me, portanto, compreender as relações de poder que envolvem a Abstract After an ethnographic experience at a Umbanda temple in the city of Rio de Janeiro, this article seeks to discuss gender in religion, power and masculinity from the discussion around a "mãe-de-santo" (a pristess of Umbanda). In order to make this analysis, the spirit called "tranca-rua das almas" that is allowed to possess her body will be in focus. I'll sketch reflections about the power relations at the temple around the association among the masculinity, the violence and the militarization caused by the police costume dressed by this spirit during the "giras de exu" (sessions that take place at the temple where the spirits of exu are the attendants) such as police uniform and bulletproof vest. Therefore, I purpose to understand the power relations involving the "mãe-de-santo" and the spirit, called here "exu policial" throught its association with a male figure linked to violence.
