Selection optimal queuing model to serve patients at CT scan unit in Erbil Teaching Hospital

2018 Zanco Journal of Humanity Sciences
There are many phenomena that require waiting lines and should be arranged in a proper way. To make decisions on determining hospital needs and resources, queuing theory is a helpful device for solving these problems. Therefore, queuing line in the CT scan unit in Erbil teaching hospital was taken into account to find queuing models for it and solving the problem of restricted queuing line with long waiting times. Data was collected from CT scan unit in Erbil teaching hospital for 30 days, then

The main objective of the study were finding measures of performance and selecting an optimal queuing model to serve patients in the CT scan unit. The study showed that the empirical distribution of patients' arrivals and departures is Poisson distribution with an arrival and service (departure) rate equal to 10.2 and 8.63 patients respectively. The current queuing model for the CT scan unit to serve patients is (M/M/1):(GD/15/∞) model and the expected number of patients in the system (Ls) is equal to 10.69 patients/day, the expected number of patients in the queue is equal to 9.7 patients/day, the waiting time in the system and queue line is equal to 1.26 and 1.14 days respectively (Ws=1.26, Wq=1.14). This single server model was compared with two other models (Scenarios) with 2 and 3 servers (CT scanner), then the optimal queuing model was (M/M/2):(GD/15/∞). The waiting time in the queue for the new system will be reduced to 1.44 hours instead of waiting time which was more than 24 hours. So, the administration of the Erbil teaching hospital must decide to have at minimum two CT scanners in order to reduce the patients' waiting time and increase patients' satisfaction.
