In a convent garden: disciplinary practices and gender relations in a North Queensland religious congregation
[thesis]
1990
This dissertation analyses the discipline and ascetic practices of the Sisters of Mercy in Townsville, Queensland, between 1949 and 1960, and the enculturation process which developed and produced the community's ethos. The exercise of power, the authority structure imposed by the legal-rational system of the Catholic Church, and the limits placed on the Congregation's authority, practices and routines by the legitimating authority are examined.
