The XRF-Mn/Fe redox proxy is evaluated with sequential Fe and Mn fractions. • Intensive diagenetic processes limit the use of the XRF-Mn/Fe proxy. • Mn can be trapped in the sediments in authigenic forms under permanent anoxia. • Catchment processes and detrital inputs highly affect Mn/Fe ratios in the sediments.
