This essay (slightly updated here) was awarded the Michael Magdoff Memorial Essay Contest prize (see Notes from the Editors, MR, April 1981). Bruce Nissen was active in the student movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He has a Ph.D. in social and political philosophy and taught philosophy for several years.
