Of the title aldehydes 1 and 2, the isomers 1 are more strongly hydrated when kept in dioxan + water or hexadeuterioacetone + deuterium oxide mixtures, respectively. The uncatalysed reaction R-CHO + H2O →R-CH(OH)2 proceeds much faster with compounds 1
