This study examined the effects of applying a hot compress to the posterior region of the neck (PRN) on a person's respirator y function and psychological state. Pre-and post-inter vention changes were compared in a sample of 25 healthy women in their 20s, 30s and 40s who were divided into noninter vention (bedrest) groups and inter vention groups. Objective measures consisted of physical indicators (blood pressure, pulse, body temperature, and oxygen level), spirometr y (for respirator y
more » ... on), and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Subjective assessments were obtained for the sensations of warmth and pleasurable feelings. Compared to the non-intervention group, the intervention group showed significant post-intervention decreases in the diastolic blood pressure, pulse, and STAI scores. Significant increases were found in the sensations of warmth in the neck and shoulder area and the pleasurable feelings of "comfort," "warmth," and "muscular relaxation." No significant difference was found in the respiratory function. These results indicate that applying a hot compress to the PRN may reduce diastolic blood pressure and pulse, increase pleasurable feelings, sensations of warmth in the neck and shoulders, and mitigate anxiety, suggesting that it may alleviate breathing difficulties in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients when psychological factors are important contributors.
