Discovering Novel Antigens
[chapter]
2010
Immunoendocrinology: Scientific and Clinical Aspects
This chapter aims to highlight the importance of autoantigen discovery for the development of immunological interventions following diagnosis and/or progression of type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that specifi cally targets and destroys pancreatic β cells within the Islets of Langerhans. Both humoral (B-cell) and cell-mediated (T-cell) autoimmunity will be discussed, specifi cally focusing on the experimental models through which novel autoantigens have been discovered, characterized, and exploited for diagnostic purposes.
