We performed bone marrow transplantation (BMT) using bio-clean bed in the conventional isolation room from June, 1982 to March, 1990. HLA-matched BMT was performed for 19 patients. HLA-mismatche&BMT and autologous BMT were done for 6 patients and 13 patients, respectively. The results were as follows. Two patients died of infection. The one with neuroblastoma was due to fungal infection and the other with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was due to graft failure and sepsis. Two patients who underwent

Of the 19 patients who received HLA-matched BMT, 13 are alive without relapse; six patients died of relaps (4 cases), lung fibrosis (1 case) and fungal infection (1 case). Two out of the 6 patients who underwent HLA-mismatched BMT are alive without disease but 4 patients died of acute GVHD (2 cases), relaps (1 case) and cerebral infarction (1 case). In the 13 patients with autologous BMT, 6 patients ar alive and 7 patients are dead. The main cause of death after BMT is recurrence of primary diseases. In conclusion, BMT using bio-clean bed is convenient and safe in children. The most important problem to be solved is how to prevent relapse after BMT. For that purpose, we must design more effectiv conditioning regimens for high risk patients.
