This thesis discusses different models, methods and theories from the field of visual anthropology as well as from Cultural and Social Anthropology of the arts based on contemporary art photography of the Viennese artist and filmmaker Lisl Ponger. Key issues include the examination of the Oeuvre and the integration of the picture contents in recent theories and discourses relating to art, the medium of photography as well as the picture as anthropological category. more » ... o the examination of visual regulations governing representation and strategies. The analysis is lying at the interface between arts, science and the historical construction of the cultural 'Other' in the picture. The discourse is drawing upon contemporary photographic works. Empirical research methods of the subject and the artistic strategies of Lisl Ponger are applied as well. Connecting Ponger's implemented visual practice and making use of scientific contributions to the visual object, leads to a discourse of parallels from both fields. Above all, the most important goal is to satisfy the requirements of critical culture and social anthropologists, who put the western "Artworld" and the "Self" in the center of contemporary Cultural and Social Anthropology of arts.
