COMPARISON OF COASTAL FLOODING PROBABILITY CALCULATION MODELS FOR FLOOD DEFENCES

Reliability calculations for coastal flood defence systems have been widely used for many case studies worldwide. In this research two different reliability tools (both aiming to calculate the overall flooding probability of a flood defence system) are compared using the same data. The main objective of this paper is to compare the different tools and the outcomes of both models applied to (i) a simple dike and (ii) a pilot site. more » ... in The Netherlands for the project 'Veiligheid van Nederland in Kaart' (VNK). The objective of this project is to assess the safety of the dike ring areas in The Netherlands. PC-Ring calculates the failure probability of a flood defence system (dike ring) and the contribution of each element (dike section) to it. The dike ring is divided in dike sections with equal properties. The calculation requires a model describing the mechanism, strength data and loading data.
