The newly developed mechanical testing apparatus was used to test the mechanical characteristics of interface layers between frozen soil and rough steel plate under the monotonic load. The mechanism of basic forces and deformation of the interface layers are analyzed in macro-mechanics and micro-deformation perspectives. The results show that the peak shearing stress, stable shearing stress, and initial shearing stiffness increase with normal stress and shearing strength of the interface layer

The shearing displacement of frozen soil particles decrease with the increase of interface layer depth, and shearing displacement increase with the increase of normal stress in the same interface layer depth, deformation characteristics of interface layer is similar with different roughness structure. The thickness of interface layer is about 2~3.5mm within experimental conditions. The deformation of frozen soil can decomposed in two parts, slide deformation at the interface and shearing deformation under constraint. The roughness of structure, the temperature of frozen soil, and normal stress has profound effect on mechanic properties.
