Characterization and study of some physical properties of the local kaolin prepared for the manufacture of technical ceramics

The effects of aluminum oxide on physical properties of alumina/kaolin clay (ceramics) were investigated. Three types of kaolin clay (Al2Si2O5(OH)4) from different location were collected from the south Libya region. Ceramic samples was synthesized by mixed between kaolin clay (90%, 80%, 70%, 60%) and different weight of alumina oxide (10%, 20%, 30%, 40%) and sintered at 1200ᵒC for 24 h, It was found that all samples intended for study has stood at this temperature. more » ... lay samples were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Infrared (IR). The ceramic body design was characterized by some physical properties measurements (%Apparent Porosity, Bulk Density, %Water Absorption). It was observed that, increase in the percentage composition of aluminum oxide (40%) and decrease percentage composition of clay (60%) lead to decreased in apparent porosity, and water absorption and increase in bulk density.
