FOREWORD This examination of the geothermal industry is one of a series of industrial assessments of alternative energy sources carried out by BOOZ, Allen t Hamilton for the Department of Energy. The overall objective of this study was to determine industry's perspective of government programs and to gain an understanding of the strategies utilized by various sectors of industry in their development of geothermal energy. Review of state planning with respect to the development of geothermal industry Assessment of the technological problems confronting the geothermal industry. These tasks were addressed in a series of interrelated subtasks carried out in approximately the following sequence. After the completion of.-a literature survey, a detailed examination of applicable legislation was undertaken. concert with this analysis,'various key government officials were interviewed to register representative viewpoints related to the goals and objectives of the Government's geothermal program. In parallel with this effort, extended interviews were held with leaders of the geothermal industry to determine the structure'of the "industry" and its perspective of the future of gepthermal energy.
