RESUMO Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar a crítica aos castigos físicos presente no discurso da Pedagogia da Moderna (séc. XVI-XVIII). Palavras-chave Castigos Físicos. Pedagogia Moderna. Criança. Abstract This article aims to analyze the criticism of physical punishment in the pedagogical discourse of the modern era. Therefore, it will be considered, mostly, the thought of Erasmus of Rotterdam, De Pueris and Civility Puerile, collated with other works of modern pedagogy, and of the history of education commentators. The avant-garde character of the work of Erasmus is unveiled in this study, as a glance at the "antipedagogia of physical punishment," in contrast to the "pedagogy of palmatória" common place at the time in which he lived the author. The author based his work on the principles of humanistic education. Written more than four centuries, the concepts that underpin the pedagogical principles, defended by Erasmus, reverberate in contemporary authors, followers of his thought, like Rousseau, Comenius, Montaigne, among others, and cut across various aspects of the current reflections on application of corporal punishment in the education of children.
