THE EFFECT OF VARYING THE DEGREE OF SATURATION OF THE AIR-SUPPLY TO A SUCTION-GAS PRODUCER. (ABRIDGED)

1909 Minutes of the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers
THE series of experiments under consideration was carried out to determine the effect of varying the degree of saturation of the airsupply, both as regards the thermal and general efficiencies of the producer itself, and also those of the entire plant including the gas-engine. To this end nine trials were carried out under approximately the same load-conditions, the amount of water supplied to the vaporizer being suitably adjusted in successive trials. Each trial extended over about 8 hours. As
more » ... these trials were carried out on a small plant, developing approximately 30 HP., and using gas-coke as fuel, it was hoped that the results as regards the efficiency of the producer would prove a useful extension of some recent work by Messrs. Bone and Wheeler, whose trials were carried out on a " pressure " producer of considerable size, and using bituminous coal as fuel. A comparison made between their trials and the Authors' is given at the end of the Paper. GEKERAL ARRANGEMENTS. The plant experimented upon consisted of a " National " suctiongas producer, having a rated normal capacity of 30 HP., and coupled to a horizontal gas-engine of the same make. The engine works on t,l e Otto cycle, being fitted with magneto ignition a.nd loaded by means of a Prony brake. This plant forms part of the equipment of the engineering laboratories at the University of Manchester, and its general arrangement is shown in Fig. 2 . Certain slight modifications were made in the producer as Downloaded by [ UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA] on [11/09/16].
