Oxidative stress and cytokines have been shown to play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetes. Glycemic variability in patients with type 2 diabetes is clearly associated with oxidative stress, which can be partially explained by epigenetics. The level of oxidative stress in patients with type 1 diabetes is increased, but the relationship between glycemic variability and oxidative stress is not clear, and there may be an autoimmune response involved.
