Difficulties and managing factors of family caregivers providing home-based medical treatments for a family member: A literature review

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the difficulties and managing factors that family caregivers providing home-based medical treatments for family members faced. Methods: The Ichu-shi Web was used to conduct a literature search based on five key words: medical treatment, home, community, family, and caregiver. The titles, abstracts, and articles that were retrieved were reviewed and a manual search of the literature was conducted. Seventeen articles were found to meet the

Results: Family caregivers faced the following difficulties: difficulties of providing medical treatments, difficulties of dealing with medical treatment problems, lifestyle change and fatigue related to time-consuming home-care with medical treatments, and using social resources because of medical treatment. The main managing factors were: mastering the skills of home-care with medical treatment in their own way, relief to be supported by professional staff , and existence of a familiar person who assisted with home-care. Discussion: Family caregivers needed instruction on how to skillfully adapt the medical treatment to their home situation, a detailed explanation of how to use the social support, and an around-the-clock support system for medical treatment problems.
