Portoenterostomy is the initial surgical treatment for biliary atresia (BA); however, no curative therapy exists for BA. Varix bleeding is a major complication of end-stage liver disease and must be determined in patients with BA, necessitating routine surveillance using esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD).
