Verse 605 of the comedy «Peace» by Aristophanes seems ambiguous in terms of its coherence with the rest of the work. Phidias appears in this verse as the culprit of all the troubles of the Greeks, which in our opinion is a misinterpretation. This article, based on the text of the comedy and on later evidence, offers a different understanding of the verse. From verses 615-618 and the scholia, it becomes clear that Aristophanes and his hearers did not consider Phidias a criminal who chased the goddess of peace away from Greece, but considered him to be a victim of an unjust accusation. It was this injustice that caused the anger and grief of his relative, the goddess of peace Eirene, which eventually forced her to leave Greece. At present it is impossible to determine the exact reading of the verse 605, which forces modern scholars to offer different interpretations of it. But we can say with a high degree of probability that the listeners of Aristophanes perceived this verse differently than we do -with sympathy for the fate of Phidias.
