The Steigmann-ogden surface elasticity model and the Timoshenko beam theory are adopted to study the axial buckling of a nanowire (NW) lying on Winkler-Pasternak substrate medium. Explicit solutions of the critical buckling force and buckling mode are obtained analytically.
