Effects of close neighbors on the impaction efficiency of a two-collector system

The filtration of air and other fluids is a widely used mechanic used in a variety of applications. Air filtration is especially important when trying to create livable and clean environments. The most common method of filtering air is using fibrous filters. Commonly, a non-woven mat of fibers is used for filtering air. This kind of assumption is not always accurate, as studies have shown some ordered arrangements of fibers have higher total efficiencies than the sum of the efficiencies of the same quantity of individual fibers. Recently, some studies have investigated 2-fiber systems and found an increase in collection efficiency of the system for specific arrangements. This study further investigates how the relative arrangement of a 2-collector system impacts the collection efficiency of the collectors in that system. The fibers in this study are approximated as circular cylinders. An adapted method is provided to analyze particle collection efficiency for close cylinders in potential flow. This study investigates a variety of staggered cylinder arrangements and briefly covers some tandem and adjacent arrangements as well. The results of the study suggest that the collection efficiency of a close 2-cylinder system depends on both the relative offset of the cylinders and the streamwise separation between the cylinders. This study concludes that the tandem arrangement negatively impacts collection efficiency, the adjacent arrangement neutrally impacts collection efficiency, and the staggered arrangements positively impacts collection efficiency for a specific range of offset and separation values. The adjacent arrangements did not increase the collection efficiency of the system but did demonstrate a shift in collection.
