Psychological Effects of Medical Uniforms' Desirability on Nurses Working in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

In the present study, eighteen nurses working in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology were asked to wear medical uniforms with different designs and to describe their impressions of the uniforms, psychological states while wearing them, and their desirability. (1) When the nurses were wearing medical uniforms that were desirable as viewed by them, they felt motivated to work and no psychological stress. (2) The nurses in the above-mentioned group evaluated those uniforms as giving the
more » ... ients the impression of "being welcome", "nurses being able to move smoothly", "healing", "being reliable", and "feeling relaxed". (3) Factor analyses of the images of the medical uniforms were conducted. The average score of the first (healing effects/familiarity) factor was high in the above-mentioned group of nurses who felt motivated to work and no psychological stress. (4) The wearing of medical uniforms that are associated with sense of compassion, from the viewpoint of patients, has positive effects on the psychological aspect of nurses who wear them.
