A design m ethod is described for the steadily loaded, full journal bearing. This is presented as a non-iterative set of algebraic equations, where a dependent bearing parameter, e.g. eccen tricity or power-loss, is predicted in term s o f known independent parameters which include bearing geom etry, running conditions and oil characteristics. The m ethod is developed from a regression analysis o f accurately com puted, fully therm ohydrodynam ic, solutions for the bearing. These solutions are

A quasi three-dim ensional finite-difference technique is used. B oth the particular solutions and the predictions o f the design m ethod compare favourably w ith a wide range of experim ental data, the latter showing an im provem ent in accuracy and econom y on existing design methods.
