Data protection, ePrivacy, and the prospects for Apple's on-device CSAM Detection system in Europe

In this paper, I assess what EU data protection and ePrivacy law might say about Apple's on-device CSAM Detection system. I provide a high-level overview of the CSAM Detection system (hopefully accessible to non-tech people), an analysis of how it relates to EU data protection law (hopefully accessible to non-legal people), and some further discussion based on this analysis. I conclude that EU law currently presents obstacles that might slow or preclude the deployment of this on-device CSAM
