Pain caused by lumbar punctures is similar to any other intradermal injection. Published studies 2,3 have shown that moderate or deep sedation administered together with analgesics is efficacious in over 90% of lumbar punctures in children. This issue also raises important questions about how the interference of families, media, and government administration affects medical care, by focusing on short-term effects only, while disregarding the possible adverse long-term effects of treatments.
