Mode hopping and carrier density fluctuations in semiconductor lasers

We treat the effect of noise on the power and polarization characteristics of semiconductor lasers within the scope of our earlier model which considers polarization switching as a successive process of polarization transformation. We demonstrate that, under particular conditions, one can observe a stepwise transition between the states with the limiting values of polarization degree, though the latter remain statistical in their character.
