A Escherichia coli faz parte da microbiota residente do lúmen intestinal de diversos vertebrados e normalmente não causa dano ao indivíduo. Entretanto cepas patogênicas podem causar enfermidades como a colibacilose, que é causa pela E. coli enterotoxigênica (ETEC) (STELLA, 2009).
