We discuss the first searches for new physics being carried out with the CMS detector, at the early stage of data taking. Prospects for discoveries of new exotic and supersymmetric states are discussed. Methods developed for background control in searches for new physics using the very first data of pp collisions at √ s = 7 TeV are presented.
