Artificial Intelligence (AI) is considered a new and potentially disruptive technology that could bring about fundamental changes in the workplace. There has been much written in the popular media about how AI will transform our lives over the next few years, with predictions including a future in which professions and expertise could gradually be replaced by new AI advisor systems. Trust in these new systems is considered vital for their successful introduction and use. In preparation for

These policies will include how we can best prepare the workforce for the possible changes that this new technology may bring. This research firstly completed a review of current literature and found a lack of empirical evidence for the psycho-social factors influence trust in AI advice systems. Following this review two online scenario-based experiments were conducted. An imaginary recruitment scenario was chosen as this is a typical example of the trust challenge that decision-makers may face when using future AI systems to support nuanced human decision-making. The main difference between the experiments was that the first experiment was administered to Ministry of Defence personnel, while the second was administered to undergraduate university students. The results for the first time to our knowledge, provide empirical evidence that could inform new policy and practice about the introduction of AI advice systems. The concluding chapter is a critical reflection on the research process and provides recommendations for future research.
