DRILL AT SCHOOLS

1878 The Lancet
To the Eclitor of THE LANCET. SIR,—The conscription would probably be very objectionable in this country. A year or two or more taken from a young man's life at eighteen or nineteen might seriously diminish his chances in life, but now that education is compulsory, why should not military drill, including rifle instruction, constitute part of such education, and be compulsory in all scliools ? An hour's drill in all sclaools, five or six days in the week, would probably in most cases do the
more » ... good. Parliament is now sitting, and it might be made compulsory in a very short time. How easily and the Horsham Union, f4 6s. (fourth time) ; Mr. Alfred Kebbell, Flaxton, 92.
