To characterize volcanic ash soil used for pasture receiving different level of cattle manure, soil perfusion with ammonium and glucose was carried out for 25 days. The effect of additiona] glucose to nitrification was examined. Soil used were : heavily manured soil(HM), rnoderately manured soil(HO), soil with eroded surface(LO), soil applied only with chemical fertilizer (G), and in addition to above mentioned pasture soils, soil used for vegetable crops, applied with chemical fertilizer (V),
more » ... as used. Using three levels of additional glucose to bring the C/N of perfusing solution equai to 5, 10, 15 was a useful approach to characterize soils in term of capability of ammonium oxidation, For soils of LO, G,V, even at C/N equal to 5, no nitrification was observed.
