Dhe string breaking is discussed in U(1)NJi Abelian effective theories of QCD. When a screening is expected, the static potentlal shows a fiattening in the long-range regien and a linear behavior in the intermediate region, Wle shew why the scTeening is better observed in the Pelyakov-loop correlators than in the WiLson leops. The bTeaking of the adjoint string is explained without the Z(N) picture.
